Shasta River Watershed

The Shasta Valley is in the rain shadow of Mount Eddy. It receives an average of 18 inches of precipitation per year. The mild climate is good for ranching and farming. Nearly 40% of Mount Shasta’s area covered by snow and ice drains into the Klamath River Watershed. Snow and glacial melt from Whitney and Bolam glaciers sink into the porous volcanic slopes and feed Shasta Valley groundwater. The Pluto Cave basalts, a series of lava tubes and volcanic debris, are a significant ground water source. Historically, the Shasta river produced over 80,000 Chinook salmon, making it the second most productive tributary to the Klamath river after the Trinity. In the 1960's the Shasta was a popular sport fishery.
