Sacramento River Watershed

The historic Upper Sacramento River Canyon teamed with salmon, the staple food of the Wintu tribes. The North/South flow of the river made it a pathway for explorers and travelers. The Hudson Bay Trappers, the railroad and eventually the Interstate 5 corridor followed the river's path. It was a tourist destination for its healing mineral waters; and summer resorts were numerous in the Dunsmuir vicinity near Shasta Springs. Outside the station in Dunsmuir were aquariums boasting the varieties of trout found in the region. Today, the Upper Sac provides many river recreation opportunities including angling, boating and swimming.
