McCloud River Watershed

McCloud is on the wet side of Mount Shasta, receiving an average of 52.8 inches of precipitation annually. Now a historic mill town, at its height, the area’s vast spring resources filled log ponds and ran mill operations. Before the building of Shasta Dam, the McCloud River was one of the most productive streams in the Sacramento River watershed. Stories from the Winnemem Wintu tribe speak of the water teaming with salmon, such that you could cross the river on their backs. The McCloud is famous for its world-class trout fishery, with genetic stock from the river having been planted all over the world. The popular fishing hole on Squaw Valley Creek in the town of McCloud is where generations have caught their first fish. This pristine watershed has a steadily growing tourist and recreation industry.
