Policy

Decision makers need scientific information to develop science-based policy. Protect Our Waters Coalition is working to develop and implement collaborative studies to better understand the hydrogeologic conditions in order to preserve the hydrological integrity of the headwater region.

Think of an aquifer like a glass, and our shared groundwater like a milkshake in the glass. Water use in the county provides community benefit. To protect community interest in water our county requires a permit to export ground water. However, an exemption allows the water bottling industry to export water without a permit. This exemption should be reconsidered: Siskiyou County Code Title 3 Chapter 13 Groundwater Management

Trout Unlimited's Western Water Project report "Gone to the Well Once Too Often" explains the importance of groundwater to trout and salmon streams. Many ask, "Why should people who care about healthy rivers also care about ground water management?" Our answer: ground and surface water are connected to each other and as a result, pumping ground water can adversely affect river flows.
